the government has provided extra money to local councils to help those struggling with costs and fill gaps in support.<\/li>\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/claiming-discretionary-housing-payments\/claiming-discretionary-housing-payments\"><strong>discretionary housing payments (dhps)&nbsp;<\/strong><\/a>are provided by your local authority (or the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nihe.gov.uk\/housing-help\/housing-benefit\/more-help-with-paying-your-housing-costs\"><strong>northern ireland housing executive<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;website) and can provide extra money for help with your rent.<\/li>\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensadvice.org.uk\/benefits\/support-for-mortgage-interest-smi\/support-for-mortgage-interest-smi\/deciding-if-you-should-apply-for-smi\/\"><strong>support for mortgage interest (smi)<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;is a loan from the department of work and pensions (dwp) and can help with mortgage costs, if you are on a means-tested benefit.<\/li>\n\n<li>if you are struggling with the cost of council tax, check if your local authority has a discretionary&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/council-tax\/discounts-for-disabled-people\"><strong>council tax scheme<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;and whether you are entitled to any discounts.<\/li>\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/apply-council-tax-reduction\"><strong>council tax reduction,<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;sometimes called council tax support &#8211; you could be eligible if you\u2019re on low income or claim benefits. you can apply if you own your home, rent, are unemployed or working.<\/li>\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/endfurniturepoverty.org\/local-welfare-provision-lwp\/\"><strong>local welfare assistance schemes<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;&#8211; many councils have a scheme offering financial assistance to low-income families in need. this may take the form of a grant, a loan or assistance in kind. this can be food, fuel vouchers, furniture, and white goods \u2013in a few places this can be a cash payment.<\/li>\n\n<li>in&nbsp;<strong>england,<\/strong>&nbsp;some councils have a local welfare assistance scheme to help people with emergency support, providing vouchers or a pre-paid card to pay for food, fuel or furniture. the type of help available and who qualifies varies from council to council. check with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/find-local-council\"><strong>your local council<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;to see what support is offered locally.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>food banks<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211;
